Interior design benefits

Our advantages

What working with us
actually looks like

We think the way a studio works is as important as what it produces. Here's what we bring to a project — and why it tends to make a difference.

Six things we do well

These aren't categories from a brochure. They're the qualities clients mention when they describe why a project felt like it went well.

We listen before we design

Every project begins with questions, not mood boards. We spend the first stage gathering a clear picture of your patterns, priorities, and the particular qualities you want a space to hold.

Everything designed together

Light, material, furniture, and colour are chosen as a set — not in isolation. When each element is selected in relation to the others, the result is a space that feels whole rather than assembled.

A contractor network we trust

We've worked with the same core group of tradespeople over multiple years. Their standards are known to us, and we're willing to put our name on the quality of their work.

Clear documentation at every stage

Drawings, specifications, and decisions are recorded and shared so nothing is left to interpretation. When a question arises on site, there's a document to refer to.

Deep knowledge of KL's market

Eight years of local sourcing, supplier relationships, and site work means we know where to find quality materials at fair prices — and which shortcuts aren't worth taking.

Honest about what's possible

We'd rather give you a realistic picture early than manage disappointment later. Budget limits, lead times, and structural constraints are addressed directly, not softened until they become problems.

Professional expertise

Eight years of considered interior work

Rumi & Alder has operated in Kuala Lumpur since 2017. In that time, the studio has worked across residential types — apartments, terrace houses, and standalone homes — as well as small commercial spaces. The team's backgrounds span spatial design, architecture, and project coordination, which means a project moves between concept and execution without losing quality at the handover points.

  • 140+ completed projects across residential and commercial types
  • In-house spatial design and technical drawing capability
  • Project coordination from brief to handover, without outsourcing oversight

Tools we use

3D Visualisation

Clients see the space before a single item is purchased or a wall is painted.

Technical drawings

Dimensioned plans and elevations that contractors can build from without guessing.

Physical sample boards

Actual materials in your light — not screen colours that shift with the monitor.

Technology & process

You'll see what you're committing to

One of the most common sources of disappointment in interior projects is the gap between what was imagined and what was built. Our use of 3D visualisation closes that gap early. By the time selections are made and contractors are briefed, everyone — client, designer, and tradesperson — is working from the same picture.

Technical drawings are shared with contractors in enough detail that ambiguity on site is minimised. Combined with regular site visits during the Pattern Completion phase, this keeps the quality of the finished space close to what was designed.

Client experience

Calm, clear communication throughout

Interior projects carry a certain amount of inherent stress — decisions to make, tradespeople to manage, timelines to track. We try to absorb as much of that as possible so clients feel informed rather than overwhelmed. Updates happen proactively, not just when something goes wrong.

  • Written brief documented and shared before design work begins
  • Regular progress updates at agreed intervals
  • Same lead designer from first meeting to final handover
  • Decisions explained with reasoning, not just options

"The part that surprised me most was how much they wrote down. I always knew where we were in the process."

Value & pricing

Priced to be straightforward, not surprising

Our services are priced at a level that reflects the depth of work involved — not inflated by overhead from a large studio, and not undercut in ways that compromise time spent per project. Each package lists exactly what is included; additional costs (furniture, materials, contractor fees) are discussed separately and transparently before any commitment is made.

The Thread Consultation can be taken as a standalone step to help you assess the scope of a larger project before committing to it.

Results & outcomes

Spaces that function and feel right

The measure of a good interior isn't how it photographs. It's how it functions after six months of use — whether the storage works, whether the light suits the time of day, whether the space still feels like yours. We design for that outcome rather than for the presentation moment.

  • Spaces designed around actual daily patterns, not idealised ones
  • Material selections suited to Kuala Lumpur's climate and maintenance norms
  • Post-completion review offered at 3 months for Pattern Completion clients

What makes us different

A consultancy tier before commitment

The Thread Consultation (MYR 450) is a standalone, low-commitment starting point. It produces a written spatial assessment and mood palette that has genuine value even if you decide not to proceed to a full design engagement. Most studios don't offer this — design work begins at a level of commitment that can feel heavy before you know whether the relationship is right.

Local sourcing knowledge, applied consistently

Eight years of sourcing in the Klang Valley has given us a working knowledge of where quality materials are available at honest prices — timber merchants, woven textile suppliers, lighting specialists, and furniture makers who produce work that holds up. We share this knowledge openly rather than marking it up as a premium.

No imposed aesthetic

We don't have a signature look that we apply to every project. This means our portfolio is quieter than studios that do — but it also means a Rumi & Alder interior looks like the person who lives in it, not like a studio's portfolio piece. That's a deliberate trade-off we think most clients prefer once they understand it.

Modular service structure

The three services can be taken in sequence or independently. If you've already worked with a designer but need on-site coordination, Pattern Completion can stand alone. If you want a design package but will manage contractors yourself, the Interwoven Design Package delivers a complete specification set without obligating you to the next tier.
